Marketa ChromkovaOn September 3, 2005, Marketa Chromkova was involved in a serious motorcycle accident in Galveston, TX. Marketa was rushed to the hospital with near-fatal injuries that included fractured vertebrae, a severely fractured leg, broken jaw, and several injuries to her face. The driver of the motorcycle, Houston Stars player Carlos DeCesaris, was killed in the accident when he lost control of the motorcycle going around a curve, sending both he and Marketa over a seawall onto some rocks.

After the accident, Marketa was rushed to the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) Hospital, where she was initially listed in critical condition. Despite all odds, she survived the accident without any major complications; she suffered no brain injury or paralysis and is progressing quickly in her recovery. Over the last few weeks, Marketa has undergone several surgeries to repair her leg and the injuries to her face. She will remain in hospital for a few more weeks, but her prognosis is excellent and she should make a full-recovery.

While she has shown amazing strength as she recovers from this devastating accident, Marketa is in need of support from her handball family. The WNT has set up the “Marketa Fund,” to raise money to bring Marketa’s family to the US from the Czech Republic. The WNT will collect money for the “Marketa Fund,” which will be distributed to Marketa and her family directly. To donate, please click here:

Marketa has been a strong presence in the US handball community over the past several years. In 2002-2003, she trained with the WNT in Lake Placid, helping the team as they prepared for the 2003 Pan-American Games in the Dominican Republic. She was also in Cortland, NY in 2004 when the WNT began its residency program, playing and training with the team, while also coaching the Cortland Men’s Handball Club.

In addition to her involvement with the WNT, Marketa has spent the last few years playing with the DC Diplomats, her “home” handball club. This year, she helped the Diplomats take first place at USA Team Handball Nationals for the second year in a row. This summer also found her competing with the combined Houston-DC Diplomat beach handball team, which took third place in the annual NJ Sportsfest.

At the time of the accident, Marketa was in Texas participating in the 2nd Annual Galveston Sandball Tournament, the only major international beach handball tournament in the US. For more information about Carlos DeCesaris, and the Sandball Tournament, please visit the Houston Handball site: www.houstonhandball.org.

Updates about Marketa can be viewed on the WNT online message board, under the News section. Similarly, people can leave messages for her, which will be printed out and delivered to her.
