ATHENS -- Now that we apparently stink in basketball -- the U.S. men have lost as many Olympic games in the last two weeks as in the previous 2,800 years combined -- it's time to do to the rest of the world in one of their sports what they've done to us in one of ours. The empire strikes back, baby: It's time for Dream Team Handball.
Team handball was invented in Europe around the turn of the last century as a counterpart to, obviously, football. Exporting sports is tough -- why soccer remains alien to many U.S. eyes and baseball to European ones -- and we're more resistant than other countries to things we didn't invent. But this game is just so dang American.
And yet. U.S. handballers have tried to spread the sport beyond small pockets of affection. They've lobbied high-school and college coaches to add it, and tried to persuade all-around athletes who aren't likely to make it in the pros to join national training programs.

The WNT is headed to the Women's Senior Pan-American Championship, to be held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic from 31 May through 4 June 2007. The eight teams in attendance will be divided into two pools based on their finish at the 2005 PACs. |
