Basic Facts DOB: 10/29/84 As a Big Ten soccer player at Northwestern University, Handball was not on the radar for Tabby Lowey as she neared graduation. Lowey was en route to playing professional soccer overseas when she received her first email from USA Team Handball Head Coach, Christian Latulippe. "I had never heard of Team Handball. The sport was foreign to me but the dream of representing my country and competing in the Olympic Games was quite familiar. I see Team Handball as a whole new world of opportunity."
Tabby grew up in an expanding Atlanta suburb with her parents, Michael and Linda Lowey, and older sister, Mandy. "I owe so much of my success to my parents who dedicated their time and money to advancing my athletic endeavors." As a child, she was a sports enthusiast, competing in everything from Tae Kwon Do to gymnastics. In high school she was elected Most Athletic and led her soccer team to a 2000 State Championship and three consecutive # 1 National Rankings. Her club soccer team competed in the US Youth National Championships three times, bringing home 1 Gold and 2 Silvers. At Northwestern, Tabby excelled on and off the field as a Three Time Academic All Big Ten selection, 2006 Second Team All Big Ten selection, and 2006 Offensive MVP for Northwestern.
Tabby's first encounter with Team Handball was at her June 2007 tryout. "Not knowing exactly what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised. Team Handball is the ultimate American sport waiting to happen! No, it's not like racquetball. It's the physicality of football, the pace and power of basketball, vision and movement of soccer, with the universal attitude of every competitive sport." The connection was undeniable.
Two months later, Tabby had graduated and parted with her internship at Nike, Inc in Chicago in pursuit of this intriguing sport and Olympic dream. "I am not only excited about the opportunity the sport presents for me as an athlete, but I am also excited about the growth potential the sport holds in the United States. It might be America's best kept secret."
Right now Tabby's main focus is on elevating her own game and helping achieve team goals on the court, but she plans to help teammates spread the sport through marketing and grassroots programs as well. With a degree in Communications and experience in sports marketing, promoting the WNT is both an athletic and career opportunity. "We realize that community involvement and sponsorship is vital for us, so the whole team is working to gain recognition in all outlets."
"I've always known that as long as there's the opportunity for me to play a sport competitively at the highest level I will take that chance. I'm blessed that playing Team Handball for the United States was that opportunity." Since she's relocated to Cortland, NY to join the rest of the USA Team Handball players in preparing for their upcoming season there's been no looking back. "I'm glad to join such a dedicated group of women in showing the country what Team Handball is all about. For me, there is no greater honor than being able to join the huddle at the end of a hard practice and shout 'USA!'" |
