"I had heard of team handball and actually played in my high school gym class, but I had no idea that we had a national team".  Erika was finishing her senior year at the University of Notre Dame when she received an invitation to come try out for the team.   Just after a few days of playing this new sport, she was hooked and decided to move to Cortland to join the team full-time following graduation.

Erika grew up in an athletic family, playing many different sports.   She focused on soccer and was a four-year starting goalkeeper for the University of Notre Dame Women's Soccer Team.   She has played at some of the highest levels including being on the U-21 National Soccer Team for two years, but the highlight of her soccer career came in 2004 when she won a National Championship with Notre Dame.   "Winning the National Championship was absolutely amazing and is an indescribable feeling.   I will never forget that day".

A three-time Academic All-American, Erika majored in ceramics at Notre Dame.   "I didn't start out as an art major, but once I switched majors, I found out how important it is to do what you love", which is why she is so excited to be able to keep being an athlete on this team. Someday she would like to open her own ceramics studio in New England, but for now she is focused on pursuing her Olympic dreams.   "I think the residency program is great for this team.   It is very important for us to be able to train together everyday since no one grew up playing handball".

Erika, along with her other teammates, believe this is a sport that many Americans will enjoy once they learn more about it.   "This next year is going to be very important for us.   If we can qualify for the Olympics, it will help get us more sponsorships and give us more resources to help expose this sport to more Americans".

Erika had no idea she would be playing handball after her graduation from Notre Dame, but she is excited about the opportunity.   "I knew this was something I couldn't pass up, especially because we have a chance at going to the Olympics.   It's great to be part of a team again, and being the pioneers of this new sport in the U.S."
